Natter and Noggin November
 Report from Laura Pyke

The pre-Christmas get-together at the Clwyd RDA centre meant familiar faces could chat over hot chocolates and mince pies and acquire a bargain or two as well! It was lovely to see you all and great to hear the positive feedback on the warm and welcoming venue.
Everything from saddles and bits to jumpers and flowers filled the common room; once again, your support is very much appreicated. For those of you who missed it here are the bargain-hunters!

The Top Table proved popular and I know some Arabs (and the humans they own) secured a Christmas pressie or two.

LMA's senior 'boy' Cellem has already been spotted by the NWAG paparazzi in this season's must have ThermaCakes (kindly pledged by Cakes Horsewear)

Lynda McFayden was also lucky enough to replenish her show kit with Arena Products. Like many of us, she is an Arena-devotee!

Pipa Edwards of Rohey Stud took home the beautiful Aziza Show Halter - send us a piccie Pipa!!  Everyone commented on the quality of finish on this halter; keep up the good work Pat, we know where to come with our colour requests.

Severn Trophies not only turnaround our engraving swiftly and accurately, they also pledged a stable door plate to the top table. The perfect finish to a neat yard. A lovely calligraphy pedigree was offered by RDA helper Eve who will be busy scribing this over the dark winter months.

Other business supporters included P&C Tilston Feeds (Penyfordd) and Acre House Equestrian (Wrexham). To these, and all our kind sponsors we are very grateful.

See you all at the AGM dinner in February!

Saturday dawned drizzly over Tropical Denbighshire and all were armed with every UK judge/stewards best friend… the full length coat! We were all secretly worried we’d be drowned by the end of the day but Arab folk are as tough as their horses. Stalls were set up, working in commenced and our mischievous photographers poked their lenses into all sorts of places…

Anne Hooley set about scrutinising the ridden section which brought forward top quality animals, pleasant rides and a very impressive array of colourful rugs! The Anglo / Partbred Novice title went to the handsome Joylan’s Harlequin (ridden by Joanna Smith), with Rachael Nelson aboard Silvan Sentiment in second. Vlacq Ciryon, standing at 16.2hh could have taken the ‘altitude / most difficult to mount gracefully’ award but settled for 3rd and positive comments on his ride.

Kirsty Nelson and Judals Shallima looked far from impressed with the rain but stood top of the purebred Novice section. They also claimed the Reserve Ridden Champion Title.  Junior Rider Sam McGovern’s gelding Qmriya Ghadameera won the Open, moving up after a very mannerly ride. Lynne Barrett and ‘Mooey’ (African Emir) seem to have mastered the perfect salute; this charismatic stallion seems to bow at the end of his show to claim the Veteran title.

The sun began to shine towards the end of the ridden classes; Open PBA winner, Joylans Harlequin claims the Ridden Championship and Cherif qualifier, while the Fenton’s homebred Hindleyhill Kinsman trots off to the end of the distant rainbow…

NORTH WALES REGIONAL GROUP SPRING SHOW 5th APRIL 2008

By Angela Massey, Secretary

By the end of the winter, I longed to see horses turning out for the Shows once again so, along with the rest of the Committee, I could not have been more pleased at the number and standard of entries forward at Northop.  A shower seemed to set in first thing but fortunately soon cleared up and the classes were ready to start in the spacious indoor arena.  This year, Mrs. Ann Leaver judged the morning ridden classes and Mr. Ian Woodward the in-hand section at lunch time.  Entries were much improved on last year; though a few classes were low on numbers, others surprised us.  Mr. Alec Knott and Mr. John Penrose were our stewards once again and I have to say they really do put in a tremendous effort to ensure the show runs like clock work!

The pre-novice ridden classes (judged from the ground) are the ideal debut for Novice horses at the start of the season and always well supported. The Anglo or Part Bred section was won by Wayne Hughes on Anniversary Girl, with Emma Meredith’s Merrymere First Edition standing second. The purebred pre-novice was a strong class and won by Madryn Tsuleem, ridden by Beverley Neal. Second was Judals Shallima, ridden by Rachel Nelson and I am sure we will see much more of these horses this season.

The Novice Anglo or Part Bred was won by Helen Evans aboard Royalview Topcat, with Sue Tandy’s 4 year old Anglo stallion, Kamal Ibn Dara, in second place.

Junior Rider Sam McGovern rode her mother’s mare, Qmriya Ghadameeze to victory in a big Novice purebred class, with EA Blues Azaura (ridden by Debbie Jones) standing second.

The Open Anglo or Part Bred (148 cm or under) was won by Emma Dewhurst on the smart stallion, Thurslow Valley Raphael. They went on to claim the overall ridden championship, also securing their Cherif qualification

Ben Hester’s grey Riding Horse Cuba Libra claimed the Open Over 148cm title, qualifying for the Cherif, before standing Reserve Ridden Champion. Helen Evan’s own Pencefn Reprint was second in this strong class.

Rachel Nelson rode her sister’s gelding Artizana Oberon to win the Open Purebred while Pat Guerin’s Zhiwah took the veteran title. At the opposite end of the scale, the Junior Rider classes were won by Sam McGovern on Vlacq Arabesque (under 17s), and Rachel Nelson on HFA Kwissikal (17 to 25).

The In Hand section began with the purebreds with some super horses forward. Katie Gore’s EA Avado took the yearlings. Alf Hallworth’s AJA Valentino won the 2yr old class, with AJA Nareyna as his second. Recently imported grey mare Ambeance brought Sally Roberts the Barren Mare/Gelding title, with the Nelson’s Judals Sallima second, and the big moving AJA Dakota Lace, handled by Bill Gore, as third.

The Pure Bred In Hand Championship was presented to the very elegant AJA Valentino, with Ambeance in Reserve.

The Anglo and Part Bred followed, beginning with the Yearlings; Mark Selby’s homebred Archwood Minuette claimed victory here, with Paddocklow Supernova second. The two and three year old class was topped by Kalusta Stud’s 3year old Riding Pony colt, Glansoden Gold Temptation. Second went to the 2 year old Vlacq Flint Talisman, and Tina Carswell’s Fairley Panache in third.

The impressive Anglo stallion, Kamal Ibn Dara claimed the Stallion / Mare / Gelding class, and stood Reserve Champion to the petite filly Archwood Minuette.

The newly added Amateur / Home Produced classes were well supported by new and old group members. The purebred section was won by Rachel Howard’s grey mare Madryn Melauna, with Angel McCarthy’s youngster, Bahcardi standing second at their first show. Kalusta’s Glansoden Gold Temptation topped the Anglo and Partbred section, above Marlak Sweet Dreams, shown by Julia Neale. The Amateur Section at the Spring show was kindly sponsored by Pat Day who donated a stunning Equus Eye sculpture as the Temple Wood Amateur Champion award. Rachel Howard’s Madryn Meluana made a successful return from injury to claim this award, making it all the more special.

Many congratulations to the class winners, and in particular to our Group members, who went home with ribbons and new trophies (courtesy of the Pledge Auction held last year).  Our sincere thanks are extended to our judges Mrs. Leaver and Mr. Woodward for doing a superb job along with our stewards - A splendid day!  Thank you to everybody for your support and perhaps we will see you all at the Summer Show, Saturday 9th August 2008 at the Muleberry Showground, Rhuallt, Denbighshire.

Top Class Arabs (and their owners) unfazed by the weather forecast!

By Laura Pyke

We were promised ‘prolonged torrential rain’ over Rhuallt, Denbighshire on the day of the North Wales Group AHS ‘Summer’ Show. Thankfully, the early morning drizzle cleared to reveal some of the finest arabs, anglos and partbreds that the UK has to offer.

A particularly strong ridden section reflected the esteem with which our judge for the day, Mrs Anne Hooley, is held; she remained gracious and positive to all, from newly backed novices to seasoned professionals. The Hopwood-Clarke’s striking bay Joylans Harlequin (ridden by Joanna Smith) claimed the topspot in a strong Novice anglo / partbred class, with Rachel Nelson aboard Silvan Sentiment standing second. The pair repeated these placings in the Open over 148cm class, the former qualifying for the Cherif Championships. The purebred Novice title went to Kirsty Nelson and Judals Shallima, with winning junior rider Sam McGovern taking second on her mother’s gelding Omirya Ghadameera. Sam managed to go one better in the Open purebred class, being moved to the top after he gave the judge a very comfy and mannerly ride. Rachel Nelson’s HFA Kwissikal stood second and Laura Pyke aboard Bhautika (owned by endurance rider Rachel Rolfe) a respectable third in both classes. Many congratulations must go to our ridden champion Joylans Harlequin (and Joanna), and reserve Judals Shallima (and Kirsty).

Peter Whitlow was set the task of adjudicating the in hand classes, beginning with the purebreds; the Welsh contingent shone in the youngstock classes as Nicky Lewis’ yearling Rosina Bint Halima claimed that red rosette, as did Linda McFayden’s Shamarillo El Shaklan in the three year olds. Lancashire’s Hi Tor Stud were well represented claiming victory in the mares (HT Orillia) and geldings (HT Ala Shan, owned by Anotnia Mitchell), along with a second in the veteran classes with HT Obsession. The charismatic Crabbet stallion African Emir (owned by Lynn Barrett) won both the in hand and ridden Veteran classes. Mr & Mrs Meylan’s black stallion A H Walmir won his class (and the beautiful Stardom trophy) and emerged purebred champion, with Miss Mitchell’s HT Ala Shan his reserve.

On to the Anglo & partbred classes and Vlacq Stud produced a 1-2 in the yearling class with their little diva, Vlacq Golden Trinket winning, and the coloured colt Vlacq Boogie Knights (owned by Ruth McGovern) in second. Miss Phillips’ two year old Maraday Mazurka claimed a youngstock victory while the adult class was won by Beverly Duncalf’s Precious Little Time. Peter Fenton’s impressive hombred horse Hindleyhill Kinsman stood second, to add to his third place under saddle while Ceri Sadler’s Henryd Gemini won the veterans in this section. The Championship was a NWRG-AHS members’ affair, awarded to Precious Little Time (Beverly Duncalf), with Vlacq Golden Trinket in Reserve (Laura Pyke).  Newly added to the schedule for 2008 are the Amateur Handler / Home Produced classes. The purebred class was won by Madryn Meluana for owner Rachel Howard (repeating their win from the Spring Show in April). The partbred class was won by Miss Duncalf, with Miss Phillips’ youngster in second. This pair made up the Champion and Reserve of this section and I am sure Beverly was thrilled to take home the new Equus Eye sculpture trophy along with our fabulous rosettes!

Alongside the AHS classes, we also ran Open Light Horse classes, judged by Jeanie Barton (ridden) and Ian Dickinson (in hand). Our principle winners here were:  Vlacq Golden Trinket – Junior in hand champion; Vlacq Ciryon – Senior in hand champion, Dara’s Kizzy – Ridden champion, with Vlacq Ciryon in Reserve. Overall Supreme Champion went to Dara’s Kizzy (owned and ridden by Ruth McGovern), with Vlacq Golden Trinket in Reserve.

Our sincere thanks go to all our exhibitors, judges, local businesses and helpers; expert stewarding from the Knott-Penfold-Georgeson trio ensured smooth running and correct procedure, as always, and we look forward to our 2009 shows!!
